ORAL AND PUBLIC HISTORIAN
Niyah Shaheed is an oral and public historian with a master’s in Heritage Preservation - Public History and a bachelor’s in History and African and African American Studies. Through their work, Shaheed aims to combat silences and inequities within the historical field by ensuring the histories of all communities are properly documented, shared, and preserved.
Shaheed prioritizes multimedia storytelling in crafting historical narratives that are collaborative, accessible, and impactful.
They’re currently serving as UNC Charlotte J. Murrey Atkins Library’s contract oral historian. Shaheed is also the founder the Queering Blackness Oral History Project - a project dedicated to challenging the silences of Black Queer history and stories within historiography and broader historical memory.
