Niyah Shaheed

Niyah Shaheed (they/she) is an oral historian based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Through their work, Shaheed aims to combat silences within the historical field by ensuring the histories of all communities are properly documented, shared, and preserved.

Shaheed prioritizes multimedia storytelling in crafting historical narratives that are collaborative, accessible, and impactful.

They’re currently serving as the Oral Historian at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library Department of Special Collections and University Archives.

Shaheed is also the founder the Queering Blackness Oral History Project - a project dedicated to challenging the silences of Black Queer history and stories within historiography and broader historical memory.
